A little history...
About 15 years ago, as I understand it, LKSD began preparing to build a new school in what is now Akiuk, or Old Kasigluk. However, soil samples revealed that the water table was rising to the surface. The village is sinking. So a drier spot was found about a mile downriver, and they built the new school there. Many people began moving to live around the new school, forming what is now Akula. A post office, hardware store, grocery store, and air strip were all constructed there. But many of those who were left in Akiuk did not want to move, and asked for a new school where they lived. So now there are 2 modern schools, one in Akiuk and one in Akula. Akiuk presumably continues to slowly sink, but it will be a good many years yet, we think, before that is felt too dramatically.
